America’s Cup, Sailing On The Site

This past weekend the America’s Cup sailing competition began on the San Francisco Bay. While the the weather was perfectly clear, the rumbles of controversy accompanied the opening ceremony. The event will last more than 2 months as teams from around the globe compete for the one of the world’s oldest international trophies.

While not all of us can race in the world’s premier sailing competition, people like Philipp Berner (above) appreciate the sport and the sea in other ways. Check out how the people below show off their love of sailing!

Screen Shot 2013-07-08 at 12.51.59 PMSailing is just one of the many passions seen on the pages of about.me. From non-profit organizations to carpentry, people love to share what they care about most. We’d love to hear what you are passionate about! Put any suggestions for future blog posts in the comments below.

Share, Connect, and Say Thanks!

Not everyone gets to watch the @aboutdotme Twitter stream for work.  There are amazing about.me connections happening everyday across every social platform,  I want to share a few from Twitter here on the blog.

Get Out There.

As a social media manager and consultant, Lauren knows the value of being visible on the web. No pressure, but I think she wants to hear from you!

Connect and Compliment.

Here is a classic example of the kind of interaction I get to witness all the time. It started with an on-site compliment and sharing that compliment to Twitter.

Everyone likes a compliment! There are few surprises as pleasant as having someone add extra positivity to your day.

I love seeing this type of positive connection- a web developer in the Ukraine complimenting a musician in the U.K., it’s like a transcontinental nod of approval.

People like Rupert and Michelle put the effort in to make their page reflect who they are, showing a bit of appreciation can go a long way.

Show Some Love.

Here is about.me CEO Tony Conrad giving Laura from his hometown a shout-out.

Pass it on.

We interact online for a reason, whether it is to connect, learn, or grow a business. Whatever else you may be doing on the web, remember to take a moment to share a compliment or two. You might make someone’s day!

About.me I/O: Interns, Offsite

Please extend a warm about.me community welcome to our newest team members Harrison and Dennis.

HarryDennis

Harrison joins about.me for the summer from Skidmore College. Dennis comes to about.me through the True Ventures TEC program. In the Fall he will be returning to the University of Chicago.

Our new additions to the team arrived just in time to be part of our awesome off-site in Santa Cruz, California. We all had a smashing time making and breaking sand art on the beach.

It was fantastic to bring the entire team together for a day in the sun and the surf. Co-founder Ryan Freitas and lead designer Shawn Collins (above: left, center) displayed an advanced creative aptitude as they shaped innovative structures out of sand, while Harrison and Dennis teamed up to ‘go big’.

Inspiration For Your Personal Brand: Graffiti

The term ‘personal branding’ only became popular in the last few years, but thoughtfully showcasing your public identity is far from a new idea. From the maker’s mark to the flourishes of graffiti artists’ street signatures, history is full of wonderful examples of individuals putting their individual mark on the world.

When we choose to connect through public spaces online or use social media, it is very easy to lose an individual sense of identity. The anonymity of generic avatars can even be useful, depending on our needs. However, the internet is not a completely separate place from “real life”, and having a consistent identity online and off can assist your efforts to build your business, personal projects, and career.

On the Internet, visual representation is a key element of how identity is conveyed. Where better to look for inspiration on visual identity than the stylish masters of the genre: Graffiti artists.

Simón Elorza on about.me

At about.me, we think of graffiti and street art as source of inspiration for understanding how to promote yourself. There are 3 primary elements to consider: name, location, and content. For the street artists, these 3 elements are the moniker, physical location, and style (size, color, etc. ) of their artwork.

Online personal branding is much the same. Our name, where we interact, and the content we share define our online identity. Do you just throw your name around the web like a common paint or sticker tag? Do people associate you with high-quality imagery and messaging, like Banksy or WK Interact?

For many of us, social media is a personal tool that bleeds into the professional world. When we use our real name online, we choose to build a personal brand that will stick with us through promotions and new jobs, as well as easily translate to offline interactions.

jelio dimitrov on about.me

An about.me page is the hub for this identity, independent of any one social network and designed to advance our individuals goals. Whether hunting for a new job, a running partner, new clients, or more Instagram followers, managing our own web presence is an essential piece of digital life.

To get the most value from your about.me page, check to see if the page correctly reflects your personal identity. Does your page encourage people to connect around the topics or services you enjoy? If not, it’s time to update your biography and add the appropriate services to help people connect with you.

Aspire to be more than a scribble, make your mark on the web beautiful.

Graduation Season

It’s the time of year when students finish class, commencement speakers share words of advice, and graduates proudly collect diplomas.

It’s also a great time to update the contact information on your about.me page, starting with educational info. Recent grads should make sure their educational details are up to date. The rest of us can take this opportunity to revisit the bio details.

Tony Conrad Bio

Including educational information is a great way to connect with current or former schoolmates. Add your high school, college, or university information and see who else on about.me represents your alma mater. You may be surprised by who you’ll find!

Tony has Indiana University on his page. With one click, anyone looking at his page can see others on about.me from Indiana University. Also, people looking Indiana University student or alum pages are more likely to find Tony.

While editing your page, update your educational info in the Biography tab. To have even more people see your page, add your most recent professional experience and your current location. Including more info will allow your page to be visible when someone is looking for people in your city, town, or line of work.

When your bio and contact info are updated, remember to claim your free business cards!
