“I remember feeling sure of what I wanted to be when I was watching Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs” in 2001. At that time I was 11 years old.”
Fourteen years later, Muratcan Gökçe, age 25, is fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a filmmaker. He just finished shooting his first feature length film called “Yeni Dünya” which he and his movie crew hope to premiere in a well known international film festival. A freelance cinematographer and filmmaker, (for more of his experience see his Backstory) Muratcan primarily shoots commercials and recently completed one for a famous Turkish airline. When asked what he’d like to be doing 20 years from now though, he says he dreams of winning an award for his cinematography.
You can check out his work in the film reel he embedded in his page and the rest of our interview with him, below. There we discuss what it’s like to be a cinematographer, hear more of how he uses his about.me page and get his list of must see Turkish movies.
What is a typical work day like for you?
Generally, I wake up very early if I have shooting that day because call times are early, especially when we’re filming for 16 hours. I quickly get dressed and put my lightmeter and viewing glasses in my bag and I’m ready. When I first get to the set we have breakfast together and I do a quick check with my focus puller and gaffer. Then we talk with the director of the film again to make sure all the scouting and the equipment we chose looks good.
What made you sign up for about.me?
I like the idea of having a page that sums what I do and what I’ve done, also try to use it as my social network showcase since I can add links or widgets.
How are you using the platform on other digital mediums?
I use the email signature and add Twitter, Instagram, Vimeo and LinkedIn apps on my page since those are the social media outlets I use most intensely. I also link my page in my Twitter bio.
Have you used about.me to connect with others on the platform?
Yes. Sometimes people see who I am and what I do and get in touch with me with business enquiries.
What are your hobbies?
Besides capturing moving or still images I really love listening to music, traveling and cycling.
Name some great Turkish movies you think everyone should see.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s recent two movies “Winter Sleep” and “Once Upon Time in Anatolia” and Ozan Aciktan’s “Silsile”. Those are my current favorites.
