One Athlete’s Journey to the Olympic Games

Though he’s twice been named the best windsurfer in the world, the road to the Olympic games hasn’t been all smooth sailing for professional athlete, JP Tobin. From having to compete for fourteen years to eventually qualify for the Olympics to doing his final qualifier with the spine of a cobbler fish embedded in his foot (it later required surgery to remove), JP’s hard work and perseverance finally paid off to send him to the summer Olympics in London in 2012.

As he gears up for next year’s Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, we interviewed this multi-talented athlete and Star Wars fan (see his Backstory quote to see what we mean) to learn more about his background, what it’s like to train with the people he faces in competition, and the other sports he competes in both nationally and internationally.

Living the Music: Lissa Monet

Some people love music but Lissa Monet lives it.

It seems the Lissa has always been surrounded by music, even as a child. She recalls growing up with her parents from Trinidad & Tobago and Granada and there always being a huge Soca and Reggae presence in her home. Then, in elementary school her parents would set an alarm for her that turned on an 80’s radio station to wake her up. In high school she went to the Cardinal Academy for the Arts and studied Music. There she was introduced to classical and choral music as well as music theory and musical composition.

But her musical education didn’t stop in the classroom, she would listen to music in the shower, while studying for exams, before going to bed and on long subway rides. And so she began comparing music styles from the classical era to current music, noting the similarities and differences.

At the Web Summit in Dublin with June Carmody

At last week’s Web Summit in Dublin, Ireland, I had the chance to see some fascinating talks, including this chat with Tony Conrad and Matt Mullenweg (co-founder of WordPress) led by Laurie Segall.

I also had the opportunity to meet amazing people from around the world, including some avid about.me fans like Community Manager, June Carmody who was there representing Memeoirs.

A Dublin native, I met June and her team members at the “Night Summit” as I wandered around looking for real Irish food. Originally thinking fish and chips, June quickly explained that was more British than Irish and steered our group to a traditional Irish pub called The Harry Lemon. She recommended their Guinness pie and as I sat devouring it, our conversation turned towards Ireland, her travels abroad, work and the conference itself.

Today Milan, tomorrow Vietnam: A day in the life of a travel writer

Imagine that one day you wake up in Haifa, the next in Acre and the next in Jerusalem and so on. This sounds like a dream for some, maybe a whirlwind vacation for others, but it’s a very real part of Elisa della Barba’s job as a food and travel writer.

While most weeks aren’t as busy as that, her about.me page does list three cities: New York, Barcelona, and Milan.  And though Milan is the city she currently lives in and where she grew up, she’s lived in all three different places and travels to the other two at least once a year.

With such a fascinating job, we decided to interview Elisa to learn more about her, her favorite foods and travel destinations, and get a glimpse at her beautiful travel photography.

Say Hello to Finnish Lapland

Alexander Kuznetsov wasn’t born in Finland, but he has lived most of his life there beginning at age 14 when his family moved to the 60,000 person town of Rovaniemi. While he lived in Helsinki for a couple of years he prefers the natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere of the place he calls home and the one he’s built his company around, Lapland.

His company, called Hello Lapland, helps local companies in Lapland create high-quality visual content for marketing. They produce beautiful pictures and videos (shown later in the post) which show off the beauty of the region. As a small company, Hello Lapland relies heavily on social media for the company’s marketing and thus has its own about.me page to provide links to their many social media profiles. They also enjoy the platform because the large background photo gives them a way to directly show off their work.

The wonderful people of Serbia
