Exploring about.me

One of the most fun and interesting things about our site is that you never know who you’re going to find. While we’re all about creating beautiful pages to showcase who you are, about.me was also created for discovering others and making connections with them. Not sure how to start making connections? Try searching for places (ones you’ve lived in and others you’d like to visit) and interests. My discovery of Nav Singh‘s page (in our header photo) came through my interest in wine.

Follow your whims as you continue searching. Click on other people’s interests and don’t be afraid to add and remove different search terms. That’s how I found Jeremy Blum‘s page which immediately stood out because of his photo.

Once you find someone interesting, don’t forget to check out their collections at the bottom of the page. There’s a good chance that the people in their collections will have something in common with you too.

Click the Discover button. Check out the Staff Picks, Featured and Popular pages and you’re guaranteed to find a lot of great people like humanitarian and former Miss Florida, Jessica Minhas.

Jessica Minhas

Finally, take a look at the people who have complimented you, viewed your page, share your location, and more.  That’s how I discovered Thuli Msomi‘s page, below.

Thuli Msomi

So go exploring, view other pages, give compliments and connect. You could find your next favorite musician, photographer, friend, colleague, cofounder. The possibilities are endless when you take the time to discover others and all the photos, stories, videos and more that their pages have to offer.

Journalists on about.me

Last week, a journalist and community member, Oben Özaydın, made the great recommendation that we write a post on all the amazing journalists on about.me. That’s over 7,000 journalists!

We narrowed it down a bit (no easy feat) and finally selected these nine journalists here.  In our post header is Omar Chatriwala, co-founder of Doha News and previous contributor to Al Jazeera English. Be sure to have a look at his page and all the others below.

Traveling with about.me: Panama

Amine Sai

Students of the Week

Our students of the week are a diverse group from around the world. In our header we have Amine Sai who studies software engineering in Algeria. Just below we also have graphic design, painting and illustration student of Ukraine, Mariia Levchenko.

Be sure to check out all their pages and, as we mentioned on Tuesday, don’t forget to add your school or university to your page.  It could make it easier for recruiters to find you or even just other students and alumni who are looking to make connections at their schools.

P.S. Don’t forget how important it is to give a great first impression through email, add your profile to your email signature so employers can link to your resume and learn more about you. Find out how to add your page to your email signature in our FAQs, and if you have Gmail, check out our new signatures.

Graduation Time

It’s the time of year when students finish class, commencement speakers share words of advice, and graduates proudly collect diplomas.

It’s also a great time to update the contact information on your about.me page, starting with educational info. Both recent and not so recent grads should make sure their educational details are up to date.

David Brock

Including educational information is a great way to connect with current or former schoolmates or simply other alumni from your school. Add your high school or university information and see who else on about.me represents your alma mater. You may be surprised by who you’ll find!

about.me engineer, David Brock, has University of Texas at Austin on his page. By clicking on that school in his bio, anyone looking at his page can see others on about.me from his same university. In this way, others researching University of Texas at Austin student or alumni pages, are more likely to find David or others associated with the school.

So take some time to click on Edit Page (biography tab!) and update your missing education information. To have even more people see your page, add your most recent professional experience and your current location. Including more info will allow your page to be visible when someone is looking for people in your city, town, or line of work.

Once you’ve made updates, don’t forget to promote your page (via Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin) to let others know your updates.  And if you have Gmail, be sure to add it as a beautiful signature to your emails. It’s easy!

Surfers on about.me

In celebration of the upcoming summer months, we’d like to highlight the pages of some of our favorite surfers on about.me. While their interests are diverse and extend far beyond surfing, all of them here emphasized their passion for the sport with their amazing background photos.

In our post header we have studio manager and sometimes photographer, Stephen Saugestad of Canada. Coco Ho, featured just below, hails from Hawaii and comes from a family of surfing legends. Check out all of their pages to learn more about them.

Featured Friday #FFaboutme

Happy Friday! Below, we’ve featured some fantastic pages submitted with the hashtag #FFaboutme from the past week. These pages nice images, concise informative bios, and apps displayed on the page.

Like everyone included in today’s post, Muhammad Umair Khaliq
(above) uses his about.me link as part of his twitter bio. This allows all the people who see Muhammad’s tweets to easily learn about his background and interests, like software engineering, football and photography! Take a look at other great examples below. Click on each image to see their full page, and remember to leave a compliment when you do!

Shubham Sharma Igor Glotov Nihal Farid

If you don’t see your page here, please give it another try next week. We review them all, but it’s impossible to fit every great page in the blog post!

Make sure your about.me link is in the appropriate section of you twitter bio, and tweet the hashtag #FFaboutme for a chance to be selected next time. A clear, high resolution image helps too.

Good luck, and feel free to share you page in the comments below!

Traveling with about.me: Malaysia

This week we’re traveling to the tropics to visit the country of Malaysia. Divided by the South China sea into two regions, Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, the country is considered to be one of 17 megadiverse countries in the world due to its large numbers of endemic plant and animal species.

In our header we have the stunning photograph of Zatashah Idris whose page highlights her entrepreneurship and passion for style and travel. Just below is filmmaker James Lee whose film reel, embedded directly in his page, enthralled us.

Inês Mateus

Students of the Week

This past week we had a great time down at UCSD talking to students about how about.me could help them connect with possible employers, alumni (like our very own Ryan Freitas) and many others. In our post today, we have a great group of students including Inês Mateus, management student and travel lover who appears in our header photo.

Be sure to check out all these student pages and think of what you could add to yours to give the fullest representation of who you are from the classroom, to the workplace to everywhere else.
