Alex Georgiades doesn’t believe in planning.

Instead Alex feels his best photos are spontaneous, capturing real emotions and allowing viewers to feel the intensity of a moment. Alex is a world traveler who loves to photograph new people and places.

As our Guest Instagrammer this week, Alex will be taking over our Instagram feed, sharing beautiful snapshots of a day in his life. Read on to learn what inspires Alex, when he first became interested in photography and his tips for being proud of what you share in a culture of comparison. 

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi, I’m Alex. I’m a big kid living life in London and working as a marketing executive and visual advisor for a travel company.

I’m a photographer, an aspiring filmmaker, a full-time doodler and a comic-book nerd. I’m lucky enough to be able to say that I’ve done a fair bit of globetrotting in the last couple of years, and my style of photography is always being influenced by all of the incredible places I visit, and the wonderful people I’m able to meet.

At the moment, I’m still finding my feet and my beat, always soul-searching, always waiting for the next big adventure.

Define how you live your life in 5 words.

With open eyes and ears.

How would you describe your photography style?

Very natural and very simple. I like to shoot things very quickly and spontaneously, without much planning, so often my photography may seem rushed or very unstructured. A lot of the best photography is well-thought out, with framing and lighting all thoroughly considered. This is definitely something I acknowledge within my photography, but mostly, I aim to capture the essence of the moment, or the emotions of the subject, or the sentiment of the environment, which for me can never take too much planning. The senses are very important in my pictures; I want people to be able to feel what I felt when they see my photographs.

How long have you been involved in the photography world? What inspired you to start taking photos?

The first real photography I started taking was with my parents disposable camera on holiday and I would be so excited to see the outcome of that roll of film when we touched back down in London. To my dismay, the roll would often be full of light leaks or blackouts, but there would be one or two perfect photographs that were very important to me. They made me care about photography, and the ability to capture a moment. And then Instagram came along and I really started to think about what I was taking, how I wanted it to be received by other people. My dad bought me my first SLR two or three years ago, a Canon 600D, and I’ve never stopped taking pictures.

Have any tips for people who want to share their photography or passion with the world?

Share exactly what you want to share. We live in a comparison culture at the moment where there is so much talent everywhere, so many incredible photographers, or styles, and all of it is so accessible. It’s easy to reflect on your own work and compare it, and think that maybe it’s not as cool or as good, but it is. Put out what you want to put out, and don’t think about whether people will like it or understand it or not. If your work is special to you, then that is good enough.

What’s your favorite thing to photograph?

At the moment I think it’s people. Anywhere. In the market, or on the beach or at home. Either close-ups, where you can really get an impression of the subjects character, or very candid and natural photography, being able to capture real emotions and feelings of that particular moment. For me, looking back at those kind of photographs is something that brings me great pleasure, as I’m able to remember so much about the moment when I took it.

What do you like most about photography?

Karl Lagerfeld said, “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” For me, photography is my only way of slowing down time, pausing it even. The intense nostalgia that can be found within photography is what I enjoy the most.

What’s your favorite location to photograph?

Right now, I would have to say Jönköping in Sweden. My girlfriend lives there and every time I’ve had the opportunity to visit, I find myself continuously inspired to shoot new things. My photography is mostly based around travel, people and nature, and that city allows me to combine all three.

Who are some photographers that inspire you?

There are so many that inspire me, and some from a long time ago, so I’m going to stick to my most recent inspirations, which are mostly through Instagram. Richie Keegan (@richiekeegan), Tim Kellner (@timtothewild), and Tove Freiij (@tfreiij) – all for their unique vision and outlook, and the way they are able to capture so much in a moment.
