Children’s book illustrators on about.me

Many artists choose to use their about.me pages to display their art. This week, however we’d like to take a closer look specifically at children’s book illustrators. While their interests are diverse and extend far beyond illustration, all of them here used their works as a strong basis for great pages.

Among this group of artists we have imagination worker, Elissambura, of Argentina who illustrated this post header. Illustrator Bri Mercedes most enjoys drawing nature and fantasy creatures as you can see in her work of art below.

Traveling with about.me: Ukraine

In our travels this week we’re going to the country of Ukraine. Featuring prominently in the news for recent unrest in the country, we wanted to look past the conflicts and focus on the personalities and pages of our about.me members from Ukraine.

In our post header we have Roxy Kozhevenikova, fashionista, blogger and musician whose amazing photograph drew us into her page and Instagram feed kept us there. Let’s not forget self proclaimed geek, Aleksej Leonov, a developer who also enjoys photography and snowboarding.

Students of the Week

This week’s students really shine with their stunning photographs, fun biographies and varied interests. Siraj Muhammad, in our header image, is a great example with his pursuit of an engineering degree as well as interests in poetry and table tennis. Then there are the talents of Shannon Callihan who showcases her musicianship on her page with a great video of her singing and playing guitar.

So check out their pages and think of what you could add to yours to give the fullest representation of who you whether it be in the classroom, the workplace or everywhere else. This will make you stand out not just to recruiters but others in about.me community who connect with your interests and personality.

P.S. Don’t forget how important it is to give a great first impression through email, add your profile to your email signature so employers can link to your resume and learn more about you. Find out how to add your page to your email signature in our FAQs.

Athletes on about.me

We see athletes on TV all the time but most of us don’t know much about them off the field.  So today we’d like to feature just a few of the amazing athletes who have pages on about.me and their interests outside of sports.

Olympian and World Champion rower, Tom Paradiso (our post header) works in digital media in New York.  Meanwhile, Andia Winslow, is a professional golfer who thinks of colors in numbers (read more on her page to understand what she means) when she’s not racing skeleton.

Traveling with about.me: Chile

This week on our world tour we’re heading south, way south, to Chile. A very narrow country, its length nearly matches the width of the United States and is naturally full of different climates. They range from the driest dessert in the world, in the north, to one of the planet’s wettest regions, in the south.

The country also happens to be home to many wonderful about.me community members including our post header, Nicolas Copano, executive producer of MQLTV.com a Spanish-language television channel made for Youtube. We also have piano teacher, Michelle O’Ryan Gálvez and journalist Alejandro San Martín.

Students of the Week

This week’s students are a diverse group from four different countries and interests ranging from photography to finance. Plus, like Richelle Ji (in our header photo) and Aaron Fisher (below) they’re full of ideas to help change the world for the better.

So check out their pages and think of what you could add to yours to give the fullest representation of who you are in the classroom, workplace and everywhere else. This will make you stand out not just to recruiters but others in about.me community who connect with your interests and personality.

Networking on about.me

Networking is an important skill to have and one which you should not be doing just when you’re job searching. You should be networking all the time, and that can mean any number of things.  It can mean getting to know more people in your industry and exchanging tips on best practices with them, building friendships with people who share your interests, helping others with their networking or introducing your friends to others.  There are many ways you can connect with people in an authentic way and we here at about.me aim to help you do that.

Connect with compliments

With our new Search function, announced last week, it’s easier than ever to find others on about.me who are in your industry, share your interests and reside in your geographic region. But what do you do once you discover them in search? How do you reach out to them? One of the easiest approaches is complimenting a person. We all love receiving compliments and it’s a great way to grab someone’s attention.  They’re more inclined to reach out to you if they know you’ve already connected with something in their profile whether it be their biography, picture or interests.

Connect via email

Were you ever really inspired by a person’s page? Did you ever think, that person and I share so many interests, I bet he or she would be interesting to talk to. Well think no further, reach out via email. While it may take some more time and thought than sending someone a compliment, a nice email can go a long way to really connecting with another person.

Be yourself

While it can be intimidating to try to get to know new people, just remember to relax and have fun. Show off who you are on your about.me page and it will make the connections flow even more easily. A person will see your common interests and know exactly why you contacted them. And with a great profile that draws others in, you’ll not only be reaching out to others, people will find reasons to connect with you too!

Favorite Collections

This past week we made a nice change to our collections, you can now arrange the people in your collections into any order you want, simply drag and drop.  Now Shawn can reorder his Artists collection (in our header) to show his favorite works of art or artists at the top of his collection.

In honor of this change we’ve decided to showcase some of our team’s favorite collections. They range from All Time Faves by Tony Conrad to Pascal’s collection of Storm Troopers. We hope you enjoy perusing them all below and get some inspiration to create your own collections of favorites on about.me
